I began today with my first visit to Camarena Elementary, where Janice is working in first grade, mentored by Lee Lidstone. When I came in the room, Janice was helping a student read a book out loud. For her project, Janice is working with Lee to design an end-of-year art project in which the students will create representations of their learning throughout the year. Janice is creating a prototype based on her year next week. You can read more on Janice's Digital Portfolio here. Here's a picture of Janice with the class:
Next I went to the Border View YMCA, where Melanye is designing structures to help volunteer coaches make sure they are creating valuable learning experiences for their teams. In order to do this she's researching YMCAs across the country looking for best practices. You can read more on Melanye's blog, and you can (sort of) see Melanye with one of her spreadsheets behind her in this photo (it's a self portrait, so the unusual camera angle was entirely her decision):
At noon I met with Andres - he and his mentor came to my classroom, because she's a regional director of marketing for the YMCA and doesn't have a specific base. Andres is going to be helping his mentor bring a technique from her previous work at Otay Ranch Mall to the YMCA: "traffic grids", measuring foot traffic at different locations. Andres will be running a "proof of concept" trial of the method to see what it can tell the YMCA about high-volume and low-volume days and times. Here's Andres and a fellow-intern manning a YMCA marketing stand at an elementary school exhibition:
My final stop was the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, where Lynnee is the main liaison with the curators and jurors of their third annual 25-and-Under Art Contest - she's also writing a whole lot of copy! You can read more on Lynnee's blog here. Here she is with her mentor, Cris:
